How to Make Dakin's Solution Dakin's solution is an antiseptic used to kill germs and prevent germ growth in wounds. Developed by British chemist Henry Dakin and French surgeon Alexis Carrel during World War I, this solution has been a valuable tool in wound care for over a century1 . Important: Always consult your podiatrist or physician before using Dakin's solution. This information is for educational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice. What is Dakin's Solution? Dakin's solution is a diluted sodium hypochlorite solution (0.5%) that serves as an effective antimicrobial agent. It's particularly useful for cleaning and treating wounds, helping to prevent infection and promote healing1 . Measure 32 ounces (4 cups) of tap water into a clean pan. Boil the water for 15 minutes with the lid on, then remove from heat. Add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to the boiled water. Add bleach according to the prescribed strength: Full Strength: 3 oz (95 ml) 1/2 Strength: 1 tablespoon + 2 teaspoons 1/4 Strength: 1 tablespoon + 1/2 teaspoon Transfer the solution to a sterile jar and close tightly.
